Eric Schwarts is in charge of the US/UN transition team & also handles multilateral issues for the National Security Policy team.

1st meeting was with a delegation from the Partnership for Effective Peacekeeping (PEP) and the next was with members of the Washington Working Group on the International Criminal Court (WICC is a coordination group of the Washington base organizations committed to ICC) Citizens for Global Solutions play a lead role in both of these coalitions.

For the PEP briefing 7 priorities were discussed:
1. Pay down nearly $1.6 billion in U.S. arrears to the UN & request Congress permanently lift the cap on U.S. dues to U.N. peacekeeping

2. Balance the inequity between UN Security Council mandates & the resources provided to support those mandates

3. Work with DPKO. Increase US peacekeeping participation & leadership by putting more blue helmets on US troops.

4. Include conflict prevention & civilian protection as fundamental pillars of the U.S. foreign policy

5. Voluntarily restrict the use of the U.S veto in the Security Council in situations involving genocide, major war crimes & major crimes against humanity.

6. Support the expansion of the UN Dept. of Political Affairs to enable it to more effectively respond to emerging crises.

7 Stand up the Civilian Response Corps with dedicated staffing & request funding for a Conflict Response Fund

For the WICC meeting we shared 3 priorities:

1. Reinstating the US signature to the ICC treaty (which was unsigned by Pres. Bush & John Bolton)

2. Constructive U.S. participation in the ICC's governing body, the Assembly of State Parties in preparation for the ICC's 2010 Review Conference.

3. Expanding, deeping & further formalizing the official channel of US cooperation with the Court so that we can help bring to justice the those responsible for atrocities in Darfur, the Congo, Uganda & other cases the ICC is involved in.

I know that this is lengthy, but this is just a small sampling of what is going on in Washington to reform health care and what people are saying about it. I would urge you to educate yourself and then take action and call your senators and congressmen.

While the First section from "BreakDownOfAmerica.com" does seem a bit far fetched, I do believe some of what they say is based in truth even though it may be exaggerated to some degree or another. On the other Hand, most of "MoveOn.org"'s references they used to prove their point are pointing back to their own web-site or that of the White house they seem to love so much. Are you really going to trust someone who tries to prove something to you by referencing their own biased work? I guess you'll have to decide that for yourself.

What I do believe, is that the U.S. Constitution give absolutely no authority to the Federal government to provide any kind of Health Care and/or Health Insurance to the American people. Thus if we truly want to do this, and do it the right way, we need to be talking about a short few paragraph long Constitutional Amendment, not a 1000+ page long law that full of so much legal jargon and "pork" that nobody seems to know for sure what all is in it. The big question I would ask, is who will truly benefit from this bill? If it's anyone other then the American people (the vast majority of whom already have Health Insurance, or could afford it if they made it a priority, and ALL of whom already by law have Health Care available to them - it's really just a question of who's paying the bill).

The Democrats’ health care bill creates a very significant financial incentive for medical schools and other entities to lower admission standards for “individuals who are from underrepresented minority groups” if that is what it takes to have the winning “demonstrated record”.

On page 879-880, the bill states that the Secretary of Health and Human Services:

“shall make grants to, or enter into contracts with, eligible entities . . . to operate a professional training program in the field of family medicine, general internal medicine, general pediatrics, or geriatrics, to provide financial assistance and traineeships and fellowships to those students, interns, residents or physicians who plan to work in or teach in the field of family medicine, general internal medicine, general pediatrics, or geriatrics.”

On page 881-882 the bill states:

“In awarding grants or contracts under this section, the Secretary shall give preference to entities that have a demonstrated record of the following: . . . Training individuals who are from underrepresented minority groups or disadvantaged backgrounds.”

On page 883 the bill states:
“The Secretary shall make grants to, or enter into contracts with, eligible entities . . . to operate or participate in an established primary care residency training program, which may include-(A) planning and developing curricula; (B) recruitment and training of residents; and (C) retention of faculty.”

On page 884-885 the bill states:

“In awarding grants and contracts . . . the Secretary shall give preference to entities that have a demonstrated record of training . . . individuals who are from underrepresented minority groups or disadvantaged backgrounds . . . .”

On page 887-889 the bill states that the

“Secretary shall make grants to, or enter into contracts with, eligible entities . . . to operate a professional training program for oral health professionals, to provide financial assistance and traineeships and fellowships to those professionals who plan to work in or teach general, pediatric, or public health dentistry, or dental hygiene, to establish, maintain, or improve academic administrative units (including departments, divisions, or other appropriate units) in the specialties of general, pediatric, or public health dentistry, to operate a loan repayment program for full-time faculty in a program of general, pediatric, or public health dentistry.”

On page 889-890 the bill states:

“In awarding grants or contracts under this section, the Secretary shall give preference to entities that have a demonstrated record of the following: . . . Training individuals who are from underrepresented minority groups or disadvantaged backgrounds.”

On page 908-909 the bill states: “The Secretary shall award grants and contracts to eligible entities” to do the same things for the field of public health as the Secretary can do for dentistry.

On page 909 the bill states:

Top Five Health Care Reform Lies—and How to Fight Back

Lie #1: President Obama wants to euthanize your grandma!!!

The truth: These accusations—of "death panels" and forced euthanasia—are, of course, flatly untrue. As an article from the Associated Press puts it: "No 'death panel' in health care bill."4 What's the real deal? Reform legislation includes a provision, supported by the AARP, to offer senior citizens access to a professional medical counselor who will provide them with information on preparing a living will and other issues facing older Americans.5

Lie #2: Democrats are going to outlaw private insurance and force you into a government plan!!!

The truth: With reform, choices will increase, not decrease. Obama's reform plans will create a health insurance exchange, a one-stop shopping marketplace for affordable, high-quality insurance options.6 Included in the exchange is the public health insurance option—a nationwide plan with a broad network of providers—that will operate alongside private insurance companies, injecting competition into the market to drive quality up and costs down.7

If you're happy with your coverage and doctors, you can keep them.8 But the new public plan will expand choices to millions of businesses or individuals who choose to opt into it, including many who simply can't afford health care now.

Lie #3: President Obama wants to implement Soviet-style rationing!!!

The truth: Health care reform will expand access to high-quality health insurance, and give individuals, families, and businesses more choices for coverage. Right now, big corporations decide whether to give you coverage, what doctors you get to see, and whether a particular procedure or medicine is covered—that is rationed care. And a big part of reform is to stop that.

Health care reform will do away with some of the most nefarious aspects of this rationing: discrimination for pre-existing conditions, insurers that cancel coverage when you get sick, gender discrimination, and lifetime and yearly limits on coverage.9 And outside of that, as noted above, reform will increase insurance options, not force anyone into a rationed situation.

Lie #4: Obama is secretly plotting to cut senior citizens' Medicare benefits!!!

The truth: Health care reform plans will not reduce Medicare benefits.10 Reform includes savings from Medicare that are unrelated to patient care—in fact, the savings comes from cutting billions of dollars in overpayments to insurance companies and eliminating waste, fraud, and abuse.11

The truth: We need health care reform now in order to prevent bankruptcy—to control spiraling costs that affect individuals, families, small businesses, and the American economy.

Right now, we spend more than $2 trillion dollars a year on health care.12 The average family premium is projected to rise to over $22,000 in the next decade13—and each year, nearly a million people face bankruptcy because of medical expenses.14 Reform, with an affordable, high-quality public option that can spur competition, is necessary to bring down skyrocketing costs. Also, President Obama's reform plans would be fully paid for over 10 years and not add a penny to the deficit.15

We're closer to real health care reform than we've ever been—and the next few weeks will decide whether it happens. We need to make sure the truth about health care reform is spread far and wide to combat right wing lies.

The Professor is Right

I can't vouch for the accuracy of this message that was e-mailed to me, but I believe the basic principles are correct.

An economics professor at a local college made a statement that he had never failed a single student before,

but had once failed an entire class.

That class had insisted that Obama's socialism worked and that no one would be poor and no one would be rich, a great equalizer.

The professor then said, "OK,

we will have an experiment in this class on Obama's plan".

All grades would be averaged and everyone would receive the same grade so no one would fail and no one would receive an A.

After the first test, the grades were averaged and everyone got a B.

The students who studied hard were upset and the students who studied little were happy.

As the second test rolled around, the students who studied little had studied even less and the ones who studied hard decided they wanted a free ride too so they studied little.

The second test average was a D!

No one was happy.

When the 3rd test rolled around, the average was an F.

The scores never increased as bickering,

blame and name-calling all resulted in hard feelings and no one would study for the benefit of anyone else.

All failed, to their great surprise, and the professor told them that socialism would also ultimately fail because when the reward is great, the effort to succeed is great but when government takes all the reward away, no one will try or want to succeed.

Could not be any simpler than that.

We will accept Socialism?

Ezra Taft Benson was President Eisenhower’s Secretary of Agriculture. Benson once hosted a visit from the Soviet Union’s Communist leader Khrushchev and here is the report he shared with America that should be a plague hanging inside every American home as a warning:

“I have talked face to face with the godless communist leaders. It may surprise you to learn that I was host to Mr. Khrushchev for a half day when he visited the United States, not that I’m proud of it. I opposed his coming then, and I still feel it was a mistake to welcome this atheistic murderer as a state visitor. But, according to President Eisenhower, Khrushchev had expressed a desire to learn something of American Agriculture — and after seeing Russian agriculture I can understand why. As we talked face to face, he indicated that my grandchildren would live under communism. After assuring him that I expected to do all in my power to assure that his and all other grandchildren will live under freedom he arrogantly declared in substance:

“‘You Americans are so gullible. No, you won’t accept communism outright, but we’ll keep feeding you small doses of socialism until you’ll finally wake up and find you already have communism. We won’t have to fight you. We’ll so weaken your economy until you’ll fall like overripe fruit into our hands.’"

Self Governance

I was reading an LDS produced church magazine called the Ensign, and in particular the message from Dieter F. Uchtdorf, 2nd counselor in the First Presidency, on Developing Christlike Attributes. President Uchtdorf grew up in Germany and had a career as an Airline Pilot, and as such always seems to have a good analogy between flying a plan and living correct principles, but what really caught my attention in this message was the following:

"The Prophet Joseph Smith explained, 'I teach them correct principles, and they govern themselves.'1 To me, this teaching is beautifully straightforward. As we strive to understand, internalize, and live correct gospel principles, we will become more spiritually self-reliant. The principle of spiritual self-reliance grows out of a fundamental doctrine of the Church: God has granted us agency. I believe that moral agency is one of the greatest gifts of God unto His children, next to life itself."

I've always found myself feeling the same way about government. "The best government is self-government or in other words, freedom to chose for ourselves, and understanding the natural laws [and consequences] that God has set forth." While we need good laws to help us live together in harmony, and to help route out the "bad apples", we will always be better off if we can live in such a way that we take care of each other and be respectful of others; very much like living our lives based on Christ like attributes.

Socialism, or even worse, communism, I see as direct opposites to this ideology of self governance. As "We the People" govern ourselves in such a manner as to care for one another, help each other to lift each other, and as a consequence have very little crime or poverty among us, we need and expect very little from our government. On the other hand, as we become complacent, irresponsible, or down right immoral and unrighteous in our persons and action, we find an increasingly greater need for more laws, more government subsidies and programs, and as a result we become increasingly less free and more in bondage and servitude to the government and it's laws.

How do we obtain such freedom? I hinted at this in my post on "Life's Little Influences", but I also liked what I once heard former President Hinckley (1910-2008) call it: Self Mastery. Our natural tendancy is to ask "what's in it for me" or "nobody else is doing it, so why should I?" Our time in today's busy world is made to seam increasingly more valuble, but we need to remeamber that Christ tought "For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it." - Matt. 16: 25. Likewise if we give our freedom to help others, we will find it, otherwise we will loose it to an overbaring and terrantical government.

President Uchtdorf finished up his message with:

"By becoming more like the Savior, we will grow in our ability to “abound in hope, through the power of the Holy Ghost” (Romans 15:13). We will “lay aside the things of this world, and seek for the things of a better” (D&C 25:10).

This leads me back to my aerodynamic analogy. I spoke of focusing on the basics. Christlike attributes are the basics. They are the fundamental principles that will create the wind beneath our wings. As we develop Christlike attributes in our own lives, step-by-step, they will “bear [us] up as on eagles’ wings” (D&C 124:18). Our faith in Jesus Christ will provide power and a strong forward thrust; our unwavering and active hope will provide a powerful upward lift. Both faith and hope will carry us across oceans of temptations, over mountains of afflictions, and bring us safely back to our eternal home and destination."

The State of the Nation

With almost everyone who was running for president this year talking about socialized medicine, I thought this video from over 40 years ago, warning about the political tides in the US, was very interesting:



We have become too numb to our government programs and bailouts that we have forgotten what this country went through during the cold war, while trying to defeat a country deeply involved in the worst kind of socialism, better known as communism. Yet today we are well on our way to a socialistic government that will continue to tell us more and more of what we can’t do. Or even worse, that we must do things that are morally wrong.

What can we do about it? I'll tell you what I'm going to do about it. I'm going to vote for Chuck Baldwin and anyone else who hasn't yet been tainted by the corruption of Washington Bureaucracies. I believe the USA needs, more then anything a strong message that we have fallen far from our Constitutional roots, and have forgotten how this country came to be thanks to Christian settlers seeking religious freedom. Am I throwing my vote away? I don't think so and here's why:

Why do we keep re-electing people who have an extremely low approval rating? I'll tell you why. It's a matter of fear. I see it every election cycle. Both side trying to scare you out of voting for anyone else. A "third party" or independent vote will only cause the worst choose to get elected, right? Maybe, and I'm sure you've heard all of this before yourself. The truth is that making a decision based on fear is never a good way to live your life. Jesus himself said to "Fear not, believe only" (Luke 8: 50). If you believe in having your voice heard, you MUST vote for the person who best represents you; not necessarily the one who has the best chance at winning. To truly "throw you vote away", means you have not had your voice heard the best way it can be.

If you vote for the lesser of two evils, you'll find yourself getting more evil, but if you vote you conscience, your true beliefs, and even if you don't win, people will take notice when Chuck gets enough votes that his constituents could have given the the person with the second most votes the official win. That party will either slowly fade away while a new party emerges, or they will realize they need to pull back to the Constitutional roots of this country or never win another election.
